In exciting news for both fans of Android and Xiaomi, Google launched a comprehensive redesign to the Android settings menu in the latest Android 16 Beta 3, with elements that look to be borrowing inspiration from the new HyperOS 2 layout to be released by Xiaomi. This new redesign brings with it a new, modern aesthetic to the navigation experience that many who use Xiaomi will be familiar with due to the intuitive UI design ethic adopted by the company.

The redesign marks an even greater shift toward visual minimalism and information efficiency, values that have formed the basis for Xiaomi’s user experience strategy for years and demonstrate the ever-growing influence of Xiaomi’s design language across the Android ecosystem.

Most Important Design Changes in Android 16 Beta 3

The new settings menu comes with several major updates that make it more usable and visually attractive. Android Authority, who first reported the news about the updates, cites four major updates to the UI:

  • Material Design 3 switch controls with “X” and “√” symbols for the new visual language
  • Independent card layout that puts each setting in its own individual card for easier readability
  • Subpage indicator carets that clearly show which settings have additional options
  • Default positioning for the top bar to facilitate information hierarchy and display efficiency

These factors make the navigation more intuitive and facilitate the viewing of more content with less scroll, reducing the need for excessive interaction.

Why Google bring HyperOS 2 settings menu to Android 16

It’s because

  1. Light mode offers clearer visual separation among elements
  2. Card-based layout offers more effective information grouping
  3. Dark mode implementation provides excellent contrast and readability
  4. Indicator arrows provide clearer navigation direction throughout the interface

The developer options page is the one that directly benefits from these enhancements, offering much more information with less interaction required.

Timeline for New Design Availability

While these new features have appeared in the Android 16 Beta 3, sources say that they will not be available in the initial release of the final version of Android 16. The new settings menu is more likely to be seen in the update to Android 16 in the next quarter or even with the release of Android 17.

For Xiaomi users, this merging of the languages of design would mean that future toggles between HyperOS and regular Android should be smoother, making the overall experience across different device platforms even smoother.
