Google is apparently drawing heavily from Xiaomi’s revolutionary design language in the latest Android 16, according to recent leaks that surfaced online. The latest version of Android is said to be adopting several core interface features that Xiaomi fans have enjoyed over many years with MIUI and now with HyperOS. This is evidence that Xiaomi fans were correct all along in their judgment that Lei Jun’s design idea for smartphone interfaces was always ahead of time, both in terms of appearance and usability.

Google is adopting Xiaomi’s design principles.

The leaked screenshots show Google employing extensive blur effects throughout the interface, much like what Xiaomi HyperOS and iOS already do. This design aesthetic produces a sense of depth and hierarchy within the interface, allowing information to be more digestible at a glance – something that Xiaomi initially introduced in the Android community.

Enhanced Lockscreen Personalization

Android 16 is testing a number of visually appealing lockscreen customization features that appear directly inspired by Xiaomi’s implementation:

Geometric figures that respond to alerts and content Dynamic weather conditions such as in Samsung’s OneUI 6.1 -Cinematic, 3D-like visual illusions that recall Xiaomi AI wallpapers Smooth transitions from lockscreen to home screen

Even with all these updates, Xiaomi HyperOS 2 still offers the most extensive customization for the lockscreen in the Android platform. The AI dynamic portrait wallpapers offer a degree of customization that cannot be matched by any competitor, with Google attempting to replicate it.

What This Means for Xiaomi Users

For long-time Xiaomi enthusiasts, this is what we’ve long assumed – that Xiaomi is leading in terms of UI innovation with others playing catch-up. HyperOS enthusiasts will just continue to enjoy these innovative features as Android plays catch-up in its core version.

Google adopting Xiaomi-inspired design elements means that future editions of Android could incorporate more of Xiaomi’s innovative design principles with respect to smartphone interfaces, which would be a step towards a more unified Android user experience across all devices.
