According to The Elec report, Apple is looking to implement the same display technology it uses for the MacBook Pro, an oxide TFT LCD panel. This isn’t great news for anyone expecting an OLED MacBook Air. After all, the initial rumors suggested that the OLED panel would make its way to MacBook Air in 2027.

Next-gen MacBook Air will get a MacBook Pro-like display

The supposed reason for choosing an oxide TFT LCD panel is that OLED tech is still pretty expensive in the laptop segment. The lackluster sales of the latest iPad Pro are likely due to the hefty price tag, which is elevated by the expensive OLED screen. That’s why Apple decided to use oxide TFT LCDs as a stepping stone until it finds a way to bring down the production cost of OLEDs.

The report suggests that OLED MacBook Airs will hit the market sometime around 2029.

Nevertheless, oxide TFT LCDs have many advantages over the standard amorphous silicon TFTs currently used in the MacBook Airs. They offer faster electron mobility, allowing smoother visuals and overall improved performance. We’ve seen them in action on the current MacBook Pros.
