Today, the future of LCD-equipped mobile phones was heatedly discussed among netizens. Well-known tech blogger Digital Chat Station gave an unequivocal answer: “It’s dead, there will be no high-performance LCD mobile phones, only low-end hundred-yuan phones.”

High-Performance LCD Phones Come to an End

According to the blogger, the producers of mobile phones have abandoned plans for the production of high-performance LCD devices. Later, LCD screens will appear only in low-end smartphones for about 100 yuan. This corresponds to the current trends when OLED displays have dominated the middle and premium segments due to their better visual quality, thinner design, and higher efficiency.

He also disclosed some display design information on the upcoming Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, and Realme smartphones under the series commonly referred to as the Ouga series:

  • Mid-range Models: The mid-range smartphones will be set with 1.5K equal-depth four-curved screens starting from Q1 2025. And such a design will also feature a more symmetric display because of its “physical four-equilateral” shape.
  • Flagship Models: High-end devices could sport a 2.5D straight screen, physically four-equal-sided, too. For the flagships, 1.5K and 2K screen resolutions are expected from the manufacturers.

OPPO Find X8 Ultra and Display Choices

He responded to questions about the OPPO Find X8 Ultra, hinting that its screen design will reference the OnePlus 13 series-one more step toward aligning with the trend toward premium display aesthetics. The other discussion was on whether flagship devices would wear pure straight screens.

According to the explanation given by the blogger, though straight screens would compete with Apple, imaging would be a little worse compared with other flagship Pro variants but still better than the standard version.

OLED Continues to Lead

It seems like, with the gradual phasing out of high-performance LCD screens, the smartphone industry has shifted to OLED displays for every major mid-range and flagship device in the lineup. The LCD will be there in the low-end segment, but its spell in performance-oriented models is over. While Xiaomi and other brands are worried about the development of OLED technology, providing better visual experiences with the introduction of some really innovative display designs in their upcoming models. More to come on these evolving trends!
